Staff Sergeant Instructor Alex Toseland, from Quedgeley, Gloucester, has been chosen to join the British Antarctic Expedition 2011/2012. Alex, who is the Army Cadets platoon commander at Hardwicke, Gloucester, will be one of four team members who will undertake the expedition to the South Pole.
The expedition is not only the celebration of 100 years of British Polar exploration, but importantly’ it will be a serious scientific expedition to the South Pole, to learn about the Polar regions and their impact on the planet as a whole. On their return, expedition members will undertake talks and workshops in the local community, schools and colleges, on their experience. The scientific and the account of their expedition will inspire all people to learn about the Polar regions and their significance in our lives. Although it is in the tradition of the enthusiastic amateur, it is not a recreational trip or purely a physical journey; it is about genuine science that makes a difference.
Training starts in Norway in March 2010 and February 2011. The team leaves the UK in November 2011 for Chile and from there to Patriot Hills in Antarctica.
Alex will have to fund most of his costs for this unique expedition, and so will be looking for sponsorship.
