The 2 star fieldcraft exercise, led by Major Blair of the Shetland Battery, started at 2.00am, with the cadets roused to make ready for a 3 kilometre trek to a position where they prepared to “advance to contact”. They then prepared to engage the imaginary enemy and win the firefight. The aim of the exercise was to get the cadets used to travelling with their equipment and weapons. To add a touch of “Scottishness”, the final part of the exercise was led by Piper Ewen Brindle!
Shetland Independent Battery cadets are this year sharing annual camp at Strensall with their cadet colleagues from 2 Highlanders. A well known officer put in a welcome appearance in a brand new role; Col John Taylor is back this year as Honorary Colonel of the Battery. Col Taylor retired after annual camp last year from his position as commandant of the Battery. His retirement was short lived as very soon afterwards he was appointed as Honorary Colonel.
