Cadet star training

There are six progressively challenging levels that cadets strive for. Here is a sample of the skills they acquire at each level:

Basic training  Topics include learning about uniform and personal camouflage, basic weapon handling, an introduction to maps and the Country Code. Cadets also undertake a number of physical achievement tests, designed to develop personal fitness and hand/eye co-ordination.

* One star  Challenges include developing weapon handling skills for both the .22 rifle and the Cadet GP (general purpose) rifle, basic first aid and an introduction to
Ordnance Survey maps and expedition equipment.

** Two star  Cadets are expected to achieve a high standard of turnout and bearing, to be able to relate a map to the ground and vice versa, to gain a recognised youth first aid qualification and to undertake an expedition of at least 15 miles including one night out.

*** Three star  By this stage the cadets should be able to command a squad and undertake advanced map reading including night navigation. A 25-mile expedition
should be undertaken, including two nights out, and the Light Support Weapon is introduced. The cadets should also take part in a community activity. Those wishing to perform in an ACF band should be qualified at Grade 4 in their chosen instrument.

**** Four star  Challenges include qualifying for a recognised adult first aid certificate, leading a community project and taking part in competition shooting with any .22
rifle, the Cadet GP rifle or the full-bore target rifle. Cadets are also required to attend the Senior Cadet Instructors Course, which is a week-long intensive course run by the regular Army. Those involved in DofE should be aiming for their Silver Award.

*****Master Cadet  Appointment to Master Cadet status is at the discretion of the ACF County Commandant. The cadet should undertake further training at four-star
level, receive appropriate recommendations from his or her detachment and successfully attend a Master Cadet course at CTC Frimley Park.
