About us:

Cumbria Army Cadet Force is part of the National Army Cadet movement. Army cadets number over 44,000 nationwide; they are supported and trained by 8,000 Adult Volunteersin some 1,700 cadet centres accross the country. The ACF is one of the UK's largest, oldest and most successfull youth organisations. Here in Cumbria we train almost 600 young peoplein 24 Detachments scattered around the county.

What we do?

We develop young people both physiclly and mentally, improving self-confidence, teamwork, friendship and leadership. We welcome cadets of all abilities and backgrounds that are able to access the majority of our activities and we instill a sense of community, pride and service.

Whilst many cadets may go on to join the Armed Forces, the aim of the cadet movement is to turn out better citizens who have taken advantage of the many exciting and challenging pursuits on offer and have benefited from the experience.

The ACF is also a gateway to recognized vocational qualifications that assist school and working life.

How we do it?

The basis of cadet life is the comradeship, discipline and training received at a local Detachment. Cadets follow a progressive syllabus that involves military knowledge and skills training (such as shooting, fieldcraft, drill, use of the map and compass and first aid). As they achieve each level, they are awarded a qualification "star" which they wear with pride on their uniforms.

Physical training and preparation for expeditions are also part of the syllabus and allows cadets, if they wish, to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Additionally, we encourage cadets to undertake adventurous training such as climbing, canoeing, hill walking etc - all under expert supervision.

Vocational qualifications are an excellent addition to a cadets CV when they enter the world of work. We provide the oppertunity to achieve the First Diploma in Public Services through our BTEC Scheme - this qualification equates to four GCSE's at A to C grades.
