It was with great sorrow that Palatine Detachment tonight said Good-bye to their senior 4* cadet. Sgt Major Stephen Draycott had joined the detachment in May 2005 and during his service he has represented Lancashire in the regional football and the North-West in the Nation football on three occasions. He has been a stalwart of the detachment's military skills team since joining, finally captaining the team to a second success in 2009 by winning both the Colour McKay competition and the Staff Weighill drill plaque. It is his positive influence and leadership abilities that will be most missed.

7 December 2009

I got a telephone call from Cdt CSM Longden, asking if I was available to be on the honour guard for Her Majesty The Queen. At first I couldn't believe it, however on my next parade night, Lt Boulton told me that I would be getting a new uniform; I didn't know it would be Number 2 Dress. S/Sgt Gisbourn measured me for the uniform, and then advised me that I would need immaculate boots. I bulled and re-bulled them to ensure they were good enough.
On the day we assembled at Company Headquarters and made the last minute adjustments. Once ready we were not allowed to sit down in case we got our uniform creased. At Blackpool North train station we along with cadets from the Sea Cadet Corps and the Air Training Corps lined the route the Her Majesty and His Royal Highness Prince Philip would take. My heart was racing as time went by
On Monday 7th December, I along with five other cadets from Wingate Company assembled on the platform of Blackpool North Train Station to form an honour guard for HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip as they made their way to the Royal Variety Show at Blackpool Opera House. As they arrived, I felt a mixture of fear, in case something went wrong and pride at having been selected. It was a privilege to have been on the honour guard and something I will never forget.

The detachment was asked who want to help Raise money for the North West Air Ambulance. Yes I thought, I enjoy fund raising and helping ‘Santa' raise money would be fun. When I arrived in Blackpool I met up with the other cadets, and I wondered who the Santa would be. Imagine my surprise when it was decided that the tallest cadet would be Santa, which turned out to be me. After putting on the costume which was nice and warm I tried 3 times before finally getting on the sleigh.

I have been brought up to believe in the magic of Christmas, so I knew exactly what the children wanted to hear from Father Christmas. I asked all the parents if their children had been good this year and they all replied yes then I told the children that all of them where on the ‘Nice list' and asked them what they wanted for Christmas. I really enjoyed being Santa for a few hours and helping raise money.
The big surprise of the day was when my parents walked past and asked where I was, and were directed to see Santa who was sat on his sleigh. My mother walked over and said 'Hello Santa' and to her surprise my response was 'You're on the ‘Naughty list'. Santa must have been impressed with my impression of him because he brought me everything that I wanted.

On Sunday 15th of November, cadets from Palatine & St. Aiden's detachments went to the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester.

We were initially taken round the main part of the museum by a member of the museum's staff. At certain points of the day, there are themed shows composed of archive pictures, recordings and letters left by different people. The Children of War showed the wars from the point of view of children. I found this very interesting because it showed how the families of the soldiers were affected, as well as the soldiers themselves.
I also enjoyed the war-time living room that was placed there. I really enjoyed this because the furniture was large and made like comic book style furniture. On the T.V. it was showing some clips from different conflicts and showed how the media reported them. Also, on the table were old newspaper articles showing political opinions on the war.

My favourite part of the museum was the Air Shard, which is a massive tower 29 metres high. I really liked the Air Shard because it showed a great view of Manchester, but it was also quite scary because the floor a metal grate you could see through to the actual ground.

27 September 2009
Over the weekend of 25 - 27 September, fifteen members of Palatine detachment joined Wingate company on the annual sponsored walk and helped to raise a detachment total of £335 for the nominated charitie, the Army Benevolent Fund and CLIC Sargent.
This was the first camp I had ever been on with the ACF. It was a great experience and I met a lot of new people. The first day of out walk was very tiring, there were steep parts and flat parts alongside Hadrian's Wall. The views were amazing from high up, and at times it was very windy and others very cold. On the first day we walked eight miles and at the end of the walk we got a chance to have a picture with a very old, famous tree from the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
After the exhausting first day of walking, the second day was easier as we strolled through the countryside and fields. We went to another three museums which showed us how Hadrian and his army had built the eighty mile long wall to keep the Scots out of Britain. However the wall is no longer the divide between England and Scotland as the English have pushed the boundary further North. I found the walk very educational and would enjoy doing this again.

It's A Knockout
Palatine entered a trio of teams into Blackpool Borough Council's "It's A Knockout!" competition, held at Stanley Park on a very wet Sunday. However rain did not stop play, and all three teams put in a strong performance. Unfortunately Boulton's Heroes lead by L/Cpl John Pace were eliminated after the first round defeated by their colleagues, The Yeadon Way Yankee's led by L/Cpl Mohammed Shah. The Yankees lead the board at the end of the first round, and were joined in the semi finals and finals by the Duke's Troopers lead by L/Cpl Andrew Hulse. In the end the Duke's Troopers almost won the day, loosing only after a fine performance by St. Aidan's Hawks and they finished a creditable second, with the Yankees coming fourth.
