Cadet Radio User Course 2008

D Sqn CRU Course Aug 2008
D SQN CRU Course August 2008

On the 2nd & 3rd August, 12 cadets from D Squadron turned up to Carlton Detachment to run the first in a series of Cadet Radio User (CRU) Courses. The course was run by SI S.Harvey and assisted by PI I.Fallows however was also open to other adult instructors to attend, allowing them to then in turn teach the course at their detachments unassisted. These places were filled by SI Scott, SI Fisher & PI Saxby.

Saturday morning was a bit of a hard slog as the majority of the delivery was through powerpoint to ensure that all the technical information was put accross in the most efficient manner, however after that it was all downhill with the cadets finally getting to get their hands on the equipment they'd come their to use! After the technical part came the exercise phase with cadets building up to using the HF radio.

One of the highlights of using the HF radio was that the cadets became familiar with its unique technique of bouncing signals off of the ionosphere allowing us to talk to Cornwall and Dorset ACF.

All cadets were impeccably behaved and did their detachments proud. All cadets who attended passed the course, with most achieving over 80% on their final assesments, three cadets obtained the maximum 100%.

All cadets were therefore awarded the CRU certificate & badge and will now play a vital part on the exercise phases of annual camp as troop and section level signallers.

If you would like to take part on the next round of CRU course, whether you are a cadet or an adult instructor, watch this space for future course dates.
