Cadets from the Shorncliffe Detachment of the Kent Army Cadets have recently been having lessons in Nepalese language and culture. The idea came from Cadet Asim Rai, 15 who thought it would be a great idea to show his fellow cadets and adult instructors more about his heritage, culture and language.
Recently the Cadets had an evening where Asim delivered a presentation, showed the cadets examples of his national dress and even bought in examples of authentic Nepalese cuisine -which the other cadets wolfed down!
Asim has been in the Army Cadets since 2007 and is working towards his One Star badge, he said:
"I thought it would be fun to teach the others some simple phrases and numbers and stuff, there are eleven Nepalese cadets in the detachment now and we all helped to show the others about what being Nepalese means to us - it is nice to be able to give something back".
Detachment Sgt Commander Bob Campbell said he is has seen a rise in young Nepali's from the local area joining and would encourage more to join as well as other young people and adults from other cultures and religions.
Bob said:
"It has been a really interesting experience for us all, we even ran over one night because everyone was so enwrapped in what Asim was saying to us! It is fantastic that we can now greet the cadets and their families with simple phrases - a real sense of community spirit! I am really proud of Asim for coming up with the idea".
