Just as the Flag was handed over to the Mayor of London in Beijing, the Army Cadets from Hereford & Worcester raised the Olympic Flag on the Castle Green.
After hearing Hereford was to be one of the very few cities that would not be raising a flag the Army cadets decided to move their ceremony to Hereford so the city would be represented.
Colonel Ian Wooles TD, Commandant of Hereford & Worcester cadets said the Cadets put on a superb display in raising the flag and were very proud to be part of the occasion, especially as they were representing Hereford.
Thomas Neal was chosen to raise the flag as a successful young sports person from the County. Thomas plays for Pegasus Football Club which has reached the Edgar Street Finals three years running and won Mailes Cup 06/07, the Tony Cove Cup 07/08 and runners up for Hillman Cup 05/06 as well as being Herefordshire League Champions 06/07 and 07/08. Thomas also plays Cricket and Rugby in the County and has Captain his school teams at Marden Primary.
Thomas said "I was very proud to raise the flag on behalf of all the sports people and clubs in Hereford, but it was more nervous than playing in the finals at Edgar Street".
Twenty Cadets took part in the ceremony, which saw the Flag being marched on to the Castle Green out stretched by a Flag Guard, before being hoisted on the Flag pole opposite the Memorial.
The ceremony was led by Colonel Ian Wooles TD and Officers and Adult Instructors of Hereford & Worcester Cadets.
