79 Cadet Detachment South East London Coldstream Guards Army Cadets were invited to Wellington Barracks in London at the end of January to welcome home No 7 Company Coldstream Guards.
Through the January snows 7 Company had been marching south from Scotland, and arrived in London at 1030 on Saturday 30th.
The Coldstream Guards is the descendant regiment of Lieutenant-General George Monck's famous 17th-century legion, and the marchers followed the 425-mile route that Monck himself took on his history-changing march to London in 1660, 350 years ago last month.
After the death of Oliver Cromwell, Monck and 6,000 men of the New Model Army crossed the Tweed at Coldstream and began the journey that would lead to the restoration of Charles II to the throne, and to the foundation of the modern British Army.
7 Company marched past the Cadets at the Barracks, and were then greeted by the new Colonel of the Regiment, Major General James Bucknall CBE. General James then spent 10 minutes chatting to the Cadets, after which they watched the Scots Guards Mounting the Guard for Buckingham Palace
